Good news, I just found a use for that scrap fabric you have laying around unused. This drawstring bag is an easy, beginner level sewing project made from your favorite textile leftover in the scrap pile.
I recommend finding a non-stretch fabric that you like, I chose this iridescent print on a spandex and think i’d like better in a non-stretch. The best part is that this bag can be made with about a 1/4 yard of fabric.
What you’ll need:
1/4 m-1/2 yard of Fashion Fabric
Thread
Sewing machine
Scissors
Iron*
Step 1: Cut two rectangles your desired size for the body of your bag (4 rectangles, if you want to line your bag.) I recommend 12in. x 9in. for a smaller size pack
Step 2: Cut out 3 rectangles for the straps of your bag as long as you want them to be, I recommend 24in. x 1in. One of these will be used for the drawstring closure.
Step 3: For the straps, fold in half right sizes together and sew 1/4 in. away from edge of fabric. Use a safety pin to attach to one side of fabric and pull the fabric through the hole, making the strap right side up.
Do the same for all 3 straps.
Step 4: Pin each side of the straps to each corner of the 12 x 9 in. rectangle and sew corners, making sure to backstitch.
Step 5: Sew the 4 sides down 1/2 in. from the edge, covering the corner stitches already made.
